What is the BX format?

BX is an embroidery font format developed for Embrilliance software. Unlike PES or DST files that store finished stitch data at a fixed size, BX files store the font outlines and let the software calculate stitches at the size you specify. This means a single BX font works perfectly at 0.5 inches or 5 inches without any quality degradation.

BX fonts have become the gold standard for serious home embroiderers using Embrilliance or Hatch because they behave like real fonts — you type your text, choose a size, and the software handles the rest. You can create BX and every other format instantly with our free embroidery font generator.

Resize without restitching

BX fonts are outline-based. Type at any size and Embrilliance/Hatch recalculates stitch density automatically — no quality loss.

Kerning stays perfect

BX stores letter spacing data so words look right at every size. Fixed-stitch formats lose kerning when resized.

Color sequences preserved

Thread color changes are embedded in the BX file. No manual color stop editing in your software.

Works in both Embrilliance and Hatch

Our BX files are tested in Embrilliance Stitch Artist, Embroidery+, and Hatch Embroidery Designer.

BX font FAQ

BX font questions, answered

What is a BX font?

A BX font is an embroidery font format built for Embrilliance software. Instead of storing finished stitches at a fixed size, a BX file stores the font outlines and lets the software recalculate stitch density at whatever size you type — so one file works at 0.5" or 5" with no quality loss.

How do I install free BX fonts in Embrilliance?

+

Download the .bx file, open Embrilliance, go to Help → Install BX Fonts, and select the file. The font appears instantly in your font list. In AlphaTricks and Embroidery+ it works the same way — no restart needed.

Are the BX fonts really free for Embrilliance?

+

Yes. Our free tier gives you BX fonts for Embrilliance with no watermarks, covering personal and small commercial use. You can type, resize, and stitch immediately after installing.

Do BX fonts work in Hatch?

+

Yes. Hatch Embroidery Designer (v2 and above) imports BX fonts through Manage → Fonts → Import. Once imported, the BX font is added to your Hatch font library and behaves like any built-in font.

Can I make a BX monogram with these fonts?

+

Yes. Our BX monogram fonts include the letter overlap and spacing data Embrilliance needs, so 1–3 letter initials sit cleanly without thread buildup at intersections. Just type the initials and stitch.

What is the difference between BX and PES?

+

BX is an outline font that resizes freely inside Embrilliance or Hatch. PES is a fixed-stitch file that runs directly on Brother machines but loses quality when resized. Use BX for flexible typing in software; use PES to stitch straight from a Brother machine.
